Dear America: Notes of an undocumented Citizen by Jose Antonio Vargas **SPOILER** Book Review*

A very important read. In my opinion this is just as important as The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. I wasn’t sure when I seen this how I would feel. Its a topic that tends to be controversial at best. I went into it completely blind and had no idea who the guy was.

Now.

These opinions are mine and mine alone, nobody paid or twisted my arm.

And trust me. I am 100% okay with you not agreeing with me. However, be respectful.

Next: I am terrible with synopsis. So your likely going to have to use goodreads or google to get one of those.

It states clearly in this book that it is NOT about immigration.

“It’s about Homelessness, not in a traditional sense, but the unsettled, unmoored psychological sense that undocumented citizens like me find in ourselves”

And I’m hooked. I honestly, unfortunately, don’t really understand a lot about the process in or out. This book was enlightening and makes me want to question more.

In part one he talks about his childhood. His mom sent him, at the crack of dawn, with his “Uncle” to America from the Philippines where she planned on meeting up with him in about a year. The school food being strange, and not understanding why peanut butter and jelly sandwiches even being a thing. [This part kinda made me giggle,TBH]. He didn’t know any English and that also was a huge adjustment. ONE HE DIDN’T CHOOSE. Growing up in a house made of cement and wood, running water was precious. Using a pail system to reduce wasting water.

After a little while, when he tries to get his driver’s license, [He was brought over at age 12] the lady at the DMV turned him away for having a fake green card. He assumed she was wrong and went to his grandpa about it. Lolo was really upset about it. And eventually explained to him that he was smuggled in and not by an actual Uncle.

One of my favorite parts of this story was his confidence to come out as Gay. I know it didn’t go well, and in the 90s it was really frowned upon. He kept going and made it. Yes there was lies and deceit. I can’t even imagine how hard it must have been.

The people that he encounters from an early age and clear through his journalism career. I know this is spoilery and all but I have to same some good stuff for you to read.

This is definitely a 5☆ read for me and absolutely one I will recommend to anyone who asks me about it. Read it. Its worth it.

This is where I leave you to go and pick it up 🙂

If you want to discuss it after reading it, please DM me on Twitter or Instagram and we can conversate about it.

Happy Reading ~
